Have you ever heard summer whispering in your ears –
Asking you to breathe the fresh morning air,
Asking you to bathe in the warm sunshine,
Asking you to take another dip in that cold beach water,
Asking you to let the cool breeze blow your hair,
Asking you to forget counting calories and enjoy that ice-cream,
Asking you to add another log to the campfire,
Asking you to roast another marshmallow…..
Well, if not then you need to slow down this summer and stop and listen to what it is trying to say to you…
Another school year has ended and I am loving the slow pace of life. Taking it all in, making the most of very short-lived warm days in our part of world.
This summer I created a beautiful space in my home which has almost changed the way I begin my mornings and end my evenings. My front porch! this has become my favorite space in the house.
One fine Saturday morning I got this bright idea of doing something extraordinary on my porch this summer! When I decided to stencil the porch and shared my idea with hubby his expression was of “here comes trouble”. His suggestion was to do it just in a small portion of the porch, but I was adamant on covering the entire porch with stencil. We debated as both of us knew this will be a backbreaking task and not something I would finish in a day. As determined as I was, I finally bit the bullet and took the enormous project in my hand. The results are astounding!
Here are some before and after pics that I like to compare….I think I did a pretty decent job last summer too but if you notice those floors, that is where all the drama comes in play.
We first painted the porch with Dulux Weatherguard Exterior Paint. For stencilling I used chalk paint and a greek patterned stencil mat from Michaels. With the help of a round brush and the sponge brushes (liked them better) I kept dabbing the paint on the mat, making sure the mat did not move using painter’s tape to keep it sticking to the floor.
Two challenges that you need to keep in mind are – taking less paint on the brush to avoid bleeding through the mat and placing the mat at equal distance after each block.
Funny part of the story was doing the math for placing the stencil mat…. in my family it is a well-known fact that when it comes to math I am not the best brains 😉 so my husband’s math skills came in handy. Once I got the hang of placement of the mat the prints on the floor started aligning better. I let the paint dry for few days and then a top coat of polyurethane brought it all together. It should take care of the weatherproofing part and I love the shine it added to the floors.
Stencilling the porch floor has changed the entire look of our front. It is now like a beautiful carpeted floor. I can’t stop staring at the floor when I am sitting outside. Not to mention all the attention it is getting from complete strangers who walk by looking at the entire look and sometimes stop to compliment on how amazing it looks. That definitely puts a smile on my face and makes the entire effort so worth it!
We are literally going by what my porch rules sign says here, taking it easy this summer. We don’t miss a chance of lazing around here, sipping on morning coffee, listening to music, reading a book, gulping down chilled drinks, hearing the cheerful sounds of birds, watching kids breeze by on their bikes ….
This summer I am very happy with how the porch turned out, it is like I created an extension to the house. A space that was not used much has become one of the most sorted after spot in the house.
A space where we energize ourselves before beginning each day, a space where we let go of all hassles and worries at the end of the day….
Hope you enjoyed joining me on my porch virtually. In case you plan on doing something similar to add value to your home and you have any questions on the process of stencilling feel free to buzz me.
While we continue to make sweet memories in this space, we wish all our wonderful readers a fun-filled, chilled out and relaxing summer!
Until we meet again, Ciao!
