“I love jewellery – everything silver to be more precise ” says Subhadra Lakshmanan whose brainchild is – Mrinmayee- Born from The Earth. Subhadra’s passion and talent for jewellery designing is very apparent in her work. Her earthy, modern and charismatic style is an apt representation of the name she chose for her business. I have been following her work for quite some time now and I was excited to introduce her to my readers and she very kindly obliged.
Subhadra calls herself – An engineer by education, developer by profession and jewellery designer/creator by passion. She says she has been a curator for more than 25 years now.
When asked about how her jewellery making journey began, this is what she says –
My biggest and sole inspiration is my paternal grandmother (daadi) who introduced me to silver jewellery when she bought me a pair of earrings when I was 8. Since then I got completely drawn to silver and loved it’s neutral effect on any attire. I never had to worry about matching anymore. One piece itself was so versatile that it seemed to work on every dress I wore.
Subhadra says – I had always noticed the brilliance of gemstones (particularly semi-precious) in gold jewellery but felt they needed a better companion to stand-out. It was when I started collecting semi-precious gemstone jewellery that had been paired with silver that I discovered the possibilities and varieties were endless!
Initially her interest was confined to reading and researching about different jewellery making material and techniques, however it all began when her friends and family began to appreciate the beautiful pieces of hand-made jewellery coming from Subhadra as gifts. And when they suggested making pieces to sell exclusively, she tried to put off their idea behind at first but her passion and talent finally drove her and thus Mrinmayee- Born from The Earth was born!
We asked her about her jewellery making style and the colors that usually inspire her
I would categorize it as contemporary-ethnic-semi-formal. Whenever I design or visualize a piece I want to make I imagine it on a variety of attires. I like the pieces I create to be versatile, eye-catching and yet subtle and simple in style. I also feel Mrinmayee jewellery should embody every contemporary woman’s personality. It should be her personal style statement. That’s the reason why I make only one-of-a-kind pieces.
The best part of working with semi-precious gemstones is that their colour possibilities (while staying true to using a natural stone as opposed to manually coloured ones) are so vast that I am pretty much discovering a new colour and a new gemstone every single day. Though many gemstones I use are classic and timeless I try my best to look for unusual colours and textures. Indigo, bottle Green and Black are my most favourite basic colours to work with as they provide a solid base in any piece.
Talking about her customers Subhadra says –
I have been very fortunate that my lovely customers come from all corners of the world – Asia, America, Europe and the Middle East. Also what satisfies me the most is that women from the age of 65 all the way down to little girls aged 6 have owned and adorned my pieces. I am so glad that the pieces I create are versatile and timeless and attract such a wide spectrum of people.
Subhadra also shared with us her studio/workspace that keeps her motivated –
I get very less natural light at my work desk, particularly not suitable for photography. So my dear friend and next door neighbour has been extremely kind to let me use their conservatory room to photograph the jewellery. As you can see the work table there looks out into their lush, rustic and beautiful back garden. I love that space as it gives me the plentiful natural light as well as the serene calm to visualise, style, lay out and capture the best pictures that bring out the beauty in the jewellery.
Ofcourse she could not have done this without her family’s support. Subhadra smiles and says –
My parents and in-laws are my biggest encouragement but my husband is my pillar of strength, my best critique and my huge support system. My 6-year-old I must say is the biggest fan of my work. I always see a twinkle in his eyes and a wide smile on his face when I show him my work every time.
So guys you should definitely checkout Subhadra’s awesome work and I am sure there will be quite a few beautiful glittering pieces that will catch your attention and will have you swooning all over!!
